January 1: What Perimenopause Really Is (And Why No One Prepared Us)

January 12, 2026

If you’ve found yourself thinking, “Why didn’t anyone warn me about this?” — you’re not alone.

Perimenopause is the transitional phase before menopause, and for many women it begins quietly in their late 30s or early 40s. It doesn’t arrive with a clear announcement. Instead, it shows up as subtle changes: disrupted sleep, increased anxiety, stubborn weight gain, mood swings, or a sense that your body no longer responds the way it used to.

Unlike menopause, which is marked by the absence of a period for twelve consecutive months, perimenopause can last anywhere from several years to over a decade. During this time, estrogen and progesterone fluctuate unpredictably, rather than declining steadily. This hormonal variability is often what makes symptoms feel confusing and hard to pin down.

Many women aren’t prepared because historically, women’s health education focuses on fertility — not transition. We’re taught what to expect during puberty and pregnancy, but very little about what happens when our hormones begin to shift again later in life.

At Hot Flash Yoga, we approach perimenopause not as something to “fix,” but as a season that asks for a different kind of support. One that prioritizes nervous system regulation, gentle movement, and self-compassion over pushing harder.

Understanding what’s happening in your body is the first step toward feeling grounded again. When you realize your symptoms aren’t random or personal failures, but part of a natural transition, something softens. You stop fighting yourself — and start listening.

This is where your journey back to balance begins.
